Preventing Birth Trauma Prenatally, in Labor and Postpartum: The Power of Communication Within our Epidural/Cesarean Culture

Emotional birth trauma is not entirely dependent on events in labor. The "seeds" for birth trauma are planted long before labor begins! Everyone who speaks from the heart or from the head with a a pregnant woman becomes her teacher with the power to positively influence her during pregnancy, birth or postpartum. Words are powerful image-makers, and those images in a mother's mind reach her body in nanoseconds--directlyinfluencing her physiology, health and well-being. That means intuitive and in-tune care providers, doulas and childbirth educators can make a huge difference using a simple holistic prenatal assessment of parents' beliefs, modeling positive archetypes rather than negative images. Word-Awareness is Word Power, and Delicious Speech makes every mother's journey sweeter.

Celebrations & Rituals During the Childbearing Years

Deep in our bones we know that birth is a rite of passage. We feel that truth quicken our heartbeat; we seek ritual, we feel our feet want to dance, but we never learned the steps. This afternoon will bring joy, dance, color, tears and laughter as we look at celebrating the thresholds from conception to cronehood. Bringing our experiences, dreams and visions together, we will begin to piece together a "quilt" of ritual and ceremony in which to wrap ourselves and the next generation.

This ancient myth is your map to a Hero's Journey, Initiation & Return through every ordeal in life and in birth.

People from every walk of life and all ages immerse themselves in this Great Story; those who love stories, who want to rewrite their own story and to see their own lives as a hero's journey. Pam will lead us through a variety of introspective processes to unravel the collective and personal meanings of Inanna's descent.

Once you hear this Great Story, you will forever identify with Inanna and everyone else in the colorful cast of characters. You will begin to see your own life as the hero's journey: answering Calls, consciously preparing for changes and descents into the underworld of your mind…through ordeals, initiations, and returns.

Dr. Nils Bergman, Consulting Public Health Physician in South Africa specializing in obstetrics and neonatology, will present Restoring the Original Paradigm of Infant Care. During his years as a practicing physician in Zimbabwe, Dr. Bergman's evidence-based program, known as Kangaroo Mother Care, realized a 500% increase in the survival of low-birth-weight babies.

An impressive body of research exists supporting skin-to-skin contact, exclusive breastfeeding and avoiding separation of mother & baby as the definitive model of care for all newborns.  In sharing some of these important findings, Dr. Bergman will:

• Explain the significance of a pre-term/newborn baby's environment on the brain and nervous system.
• Identify short-term and potential long-term physiological effects of the separation of mother and baby.
• Demonstrate practical techniques for implementing Kangaroo Mother Care with mothers and babies.
